Insurance Crap

So, we just found out that Dave’s company is changing insurance providers…. next WEDNESDAY.  If anyone has any reassuring "your pregnancy will be covered, so relax" stories to share, I’d love to hear them! And if anyone has anything to say about Aetna as in insurer, I’d love to hear that too.  (We don’t know what plan yet, but that’s the company we’re being switched to.)

  1. I currently have Aetna, and have had no problems with it or anything. I don’t have much to compare it to, but so far I haven’t had to pay a co-pay for anything baby-related unless a sonogram was being given (no $ for blood work or regular check ups, which was a nice surprise.) I found my doc through Aetna’s website, which gives you all your options within a certain radius that are covered. Also, a plus is that I think it is pretty universally accepted- so your doc/specialist/hospital shouldn’t have any issues with the switch!

  2. I switched insurance while pregnant because we moved to a new state and I got a new job at about 4 months along. There was no covering the pregnancy and birth. My new insurance has given me a great deal of trouble regarding Sadie’s treatment for newborn jaundice, such that we are still debating with them over it and she is nearly a year old. But, NO PROBLEM AT ALL with the pregnancy coverage.

  3. I switched insurance providers the first time around at 36 weeks. Heh. I looked a tad funny walking in and announcing I had new insurance. Our policy states that pregnancy is not a pre-existing condition, so that is what you need to check for.

  4. The university cut benefits while I was pregnant… I think I was around 35 weeks (damn, that seems like a long time ago). So I had to switch to a new policy with REDUCED benefits. I think legally after you are so far along they can’t force you switch doctors, but there was nothing I could do to avoid the increased out-of-pocket cost… Which sucked since we hadn’t budgeted for it and it had to come out of the money we’d tucked away for while I wasn’t working. Stinkin’ bastards.
