Day 1

Despite the fact that I still feel awful, and am only getting about ten percent of my RDA of Oxygen via my nose, I started. I did it! I did more of a Day .75, as I did 3 sets of Run for 60 seconds before I thought I might fall over head first in a snowbank, but I did it anyway. I found that the 5 minute brisk walk could route around a small side street, and that the cross streets between the main roads over here are good for exactly 60 seconds of running. Nice.  It worked that I could walk on the plowed, but still snowy/icy sidewalks, and run on the clear and untrafficked connecting streets.   I ended up being out for 23 minutes, which is seven minutes less than the C25k goals, but for my first day, and being sick, and staggering in to beg Dave to run upstairs and find my inhaler, not so bad. You know?

It’s about 32 degrees, so not below freezing, but I got warm pretty
quickly wearing my hot chillys, a pair of poly blend ‘active’ pants
from Lands End, a CoolMax bra from Lane Bryant (that could be more
supportive, but definitely better than any ‘sports bra’ you’ll get at a
department store, esp if you’re a DD) A CoolMax blend zippered
pullover, a polarfleece pullover from LLBean, Smartwool socks, 180s
(with headphones & a Virgin pulse radio) and my special New Balance
motion control shoes that I bought 2 years ago solely (har!) for this
purpose.  I was warmer than I expected to be.  The radio and my
sunglasses helped me deal with the embarrassment factor (because it’s a
big one for me) by blocking out the imaginary finger-pointing and
laughing.  I used one of Dave’s stopwatches for timing, but finding out
that the cross streets are 60 seconds (for now) is a good start.

So, how is everyone else?  Since the goal is 3x a week, and we all live in differnt climates and have different responsibilities, let’s say that by next Saturday, we’ve all done 3x week, in whatever fashion.  I also am batting around some other ideas, like an internet coast-to-coast honor system 5k on Memorial Day or whatever (we all do 5k, and time ourselves, and report the results? Does that make sense?) because I can’t find any Official Races to make as a goal until Race for the Cure which is in September. But an internet race, that’s just up my alley.

So, if you started today, or are starting tomorrow, go team!

  1. Hurray for you! I did about a mile walk taking my pup to the dog run and then chased her around the run on and off for a good 2 hours. I know it isn’t by the plan, but at least I got off my ass on a Sat. I can’t wait to hear how everyone else did.

  2. I bet you don’t want to hear that I went running on Saturday in a t-shirt and shorts, do you? Sorry. But it was the first day in quite some time that didn’t rain, so it’s not like we’re exactly a tropical climate. I’m not doing the C25K plan really, but I did 40 minutes, at a mix of about 2/3 jogging and the rest a brisk walk.
When we say 3x/wk, are we talking running only, or cardio more generally?
