Oh, this site is so, so addictive. You can visually see the popularity shifts in names, and it layers the various spellings to get a truer picture than most lists. Type in the first letters and it shifts as you type, so if you want a "B" name or whatever, it lists all possibilities. I’m going to add it to the Babyopedia (link at right).
(FYI, on my iBook, I had to use IE to view it; Firefox & Mozilla wouldn’t play nice.)
wow, my name is super unpopular now. Oh well, I’m unique! Apparently. And it peaked in popularity in the 1920s.
Thanks a lot. I have craploads of work to do and I can’t tear myself away! I laughed, though, because my parents didn’t know any other Julies and really thought they were being unique…and then I got to Kindergarten.
My name is rising, rising, rising in popularity. I say we bring back some really old timey names for our kids. Like: Bertha, Doris, Ethel, Mabel, Mavis, Ada, Adelaide. And Chet, Royce, Hoyt, Chip. Or– come to think of it– maybe not.
Another post to say that I showed my man that site and he still says that he wants his first-born son to be named Stilgar. Or Stumptail.
I am currently falling out of favor after being UBER popular in the 90s. Ah well, I had it first, I suppose.
